Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
Yes, a valid referral from your GP or specialist is required for most breast imaging services, including mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and Cone Beam Breast CT (CBBCT). This ensures your scan is clinically appropriate and, where eligible, may allow you to claim Medicare rebates. We accept all referrals.
Your GP or specialist can:
Provide you with a physical or electronic referral to send to our team by email and bring to your appointment
For a referral specifically for our Cone Beam Breast CT, your doctor can simply:
Write “Cone Beam Breast CT” on any standard referral pad, including those from other diagnostic providers
Or, download our dedicated breast imaging referral form from our website for convenience
We are happy to assist your doctor or clinic with referral information at any time.
How do I prepare for my breast imaging?
When attending Breast Health Imaging™ for breast imaging, please bring any previous breast imaging to your appointment as these can be useful for comparison and helpful for the Radiologist to interpret any subtle changes in the breast tissue. It is important to not wear any deodorant, talcum powder or lotions prior to your breast imaging as these may affect image quality and can have the ability to mimic pathology.
A two-piece outfit is recommended, where possible, for comfortability during the examination process. Gowns can also be provided for comfort and ease.
If possible, knowing your family history (Maternal and Paternal) for a diagnosis of breast cancer, gynaecological cancers, or bowel cancer, would be helpful. Upon arrival for your appointment, you will be required to complete a questionnaire detailing your history, any breast symptoms and family history.
Can I have breast imaging with implants?
All breast imaging can be performed comfortably and safely for patients with breast implants with half the radiation dose. Breast Health Imaging™ is the first in Australia to offer innovative breast imaging technology that uses no compression. This state-of-the-art modality can specifically be used for breast imaging in women with implants.
At Breast Health Imaging™, our highly trained staff use specific imaging techniques, to ensure the least amount of compression is applied to the implant, whilst obtaining the best images possible.
What happens after my breast imaging?
Once all imaging has been completed and reviewed by the radiologist, your referring doctor will receive a comprehensive report and can discuss the results with you in further detail if necessary.
Patients who have received contrast mammography may be required to stay for a short observation period. If there are unusual findings from the imaging, you may be required to stay or return for a biopsy procedure. This will be discussed with you at the time of your appointment.
Does non-compression imaging and mammograms have the same radiation dose?
Yes, our non-compression imaging and mammograms have comparable low-dose radiation levels. Although, for women with implants, our new non-compression technology actually delivers half the radiation dose compared to traditional mammography.
How often do I need to have a breast imaging?
It is recommended that women aged 40 to 74 should have a breast screening every 1 year. Some women may need to have breast imaging more regularly due to previous benign breast disease, strong family history or breast tissue type. At Breast Health Imaging™, we assess each patient individually to determine the appropriate imaging modalities and review process.
Who should have breast imaging?
Ladies from the age 40 should consider having routine breast imaging. Ladies under age 40 will be assessed individually based on clinical presentation, personal/family history and need for imaging. Anyone who is symptomatic should be referred for assessment.
